CHARACTER NAME: Heisuke Toudou
SERIES: Hakuoki: Shinsengumi Kitan
CANON POINT: The night of the Aburakoji Affair, just before Itou's body is discovered
APPEARANCE: Over here!
He's also a simple sort of man, coming right out and saying he doesn't read much and choosing to protect Chizuru instead of sorting out his political opinions. At times, this causes him problems, because no matter how much he agonizes over a decision, he usually regrets his eventual choice. While he drifts away from his friends because of conflicts of interest, he inevitably comes back, and he is quick to step to their aid in good times or bad. Heisuke's family background is complicated, because he is an illegitimate child of a lord. He has a lot of insecurities relating to people caring about him, because his father pays Heisuke off to never come near him. As a result, Heisuke has never known a true family and is convinced that nobody outside of the Shinsengumi would care if he lived or died. From his own comments and comments made about him, he's not as good at handling pain as some of the other Shinsengumi(crying after being injured until the medicine kicked in) and fears death(he can't sleep before he's going to take point on a patrol because he's thinking about getting killed). The fact that he is very much afraid of dying(when he took the ochimizu, he was only thinking of not wanting to die), proves that he is an extremely brave individual for rushing into battles and risking his own life to save others. ABILITIES: Peak physical fitness, training with a sword, combat experience POSSESSIONS: His usual (japanese style) clothing >PERSONA MAJOR ARCANA: Fool, Magician, Sun SHADOW: Heisuke's shadow appears on television as a version of himself dressed in the Shinsengumi uniform, drenched in blood with a sword through his chest. He'll find out what happened to himself according to history shortly before this, and is still reeling from the fact that his leaving the Shinsengumi, an action he immediately regretted, led to his former team killing him. His shadow taunts him about his parentage and the fact that the Shinsengumi killed him rather than taking him back, calling him unwanted and mocking him for being the 'kid' of his friends, telling him that he will never become a real man and that it's good that he died before his poor choices could drag everyone down around him. Once rejected, the shadow takes a shape of a young child with a bloodied face limply holding a sword, chained to the foot of a huge man with no face at all, who is dressed like a high class official. The man stands with his back to the child, and looks back at him with his featureless face only when he attacks. The child spams fire attacks, catching on fire when he does so, and attacks with the sword. The physical attacks can cause confusion(turning on the party, comparable to Heisuke's leaving the Shinsengumi and getting killed by them). PERSONA: Sanbo-Koujin (Three-headed man with flaming hair and fangs, armed with a sword)
PERSONA ACQUISTION: Facing his shadow! He's got some fairly deep seated issues that would be fun to explore. >SAMPLES FIRST PERSON ACTION, JOURNAL, OR PHONE SAMPLE: Here and Here! THIRD PERSON SAMPLE: Many of the things held sacred by the men of Heisuke's time have since been abolished, the most shocking of which was the outright banning of swords. It had been a huge blow to morale, but today, Heisuke has found the solution to the purposelessness that has sunk in. And that solution is, of course, huge quantities of cheap sake. The idea probably didn't really count as a stroke of inspiration, but Heisuke sets out from the Inn grinning like he's just come up with the idea of the century. Nobody can top his brilliance today, he is on fire. He's still wearing the clothes he arrived in, because western clothes seem to have only gotten worse while he was absent from... well, existence? Trying to figure out why the flow of time seemed to be broken only made his brain feel broken as well. So it's a given that Heisuke gets some very weird looks when he walks into Konishi Liquors, looking very much like what he is-- a man snatched out of the pages of a history book. He doesn't notice the stares from the shopkeeper, instead gravitating to the selection of sake and examining it with all the enthusiasm of a child in a toy store. It takes him a good 5 minutes to make his choice, and the man behind the counter startles at how quickly Heisuke crosses the room. "I'd like to buy this!" He remains completely oblivious to the way the cashier is staring, setting the bottle down on the counter with a clink. "You got ID, kid?" The man behind the counter raises an eyebrow. Whatever he was expecting as an answer, it certainly wasn't the blank look Heisuke actually responds with. "ID?" He asks, tilting his head slightly to the side like a confused dog. The shopkeeper sighs heavily and crosses his arms. "You need identification to prove you're 20 or older," He isn't even pretending not to be annoyed at this point. "I need to bring someone with me who knows how old I am? That's stupid!" The man behind the counter only groans. Of particular note in regard to his protective tendencies is his relationship with Chizuru. Even before entering his route, he is willing to throw away his weapons to save her in the midst of a heated battle, which would have effectively doomed him if not for the ochimizu. While he is also more than willing to defend his male friends, the fairer sex gets special consideration, likely at least in part due to the time period he's from. He does not, however, treat Chizuru's gender as a reason to exclude her from anything-- he sees no problem with bringing her along on his adventures drinking with the guys, nor with bringing her around on patrols. His relationships with Harada and Nagakura, his drinking buddies, are an excellent example of his status of 'the kid brother'. Both of them tease him mercilessly, fight with him over food, and generally bicker like children. However, it's also clear that there is a lot of trust and loyalty between them regardless of the teasing, as demonstrated by his friends' anger when he leaves without telling them first and attempts to get him back onto the Shinsengumi. Hijikata, on the other hand, Heisuke is somewhat afraid of, and with reason, as Hijikata is the one to dole out punishment when Heisuke does something stupid. Heisuke is chatty to the point of being annoying, and very energetic in all of his social interactions, unless something heavy is weighing on his mind. He's a cheerful drunk, gets lonely and melancholy when isolated and values the opinions of others. And, no, seriously, he never shuts up. |
